Sustainable Entertainment Upgrades

EDC

A sustainable future

Sustainability has become a key focus for 2024’s hospitality industry as hotels strive to meet the growing expectations of eco-conscious travelers, while also addressing their own environmental impact.

Indeed, sustainable practices are no longer optional, but an essential requirement for hotels looking to remain competitive.  And as part of this shift, hotels are seeking ways to enhance their guest experience without compromising their environmental credentials.

E-waste and end-of-life management

When analyzing a TV entertainment system’s carbon footprint, end-of-life management is critical. TVs that reach the end of their useful life become part of the growing global issue of electronic waste (e-waste).

For hotels, the push to upgrade technology must balance with responsible e-waste management practices, such as recycling programs and partnerships with organizations that specialize in electronic waste disposal. This ensures that TVs are either repurposed, recycled, or disposed of in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

However, surely THE most practical solution is to delay and / or reduce the disposal of TVs in the first instance?

Getting the balance right

Absolutely, but it’s complicated!

Hotels looking to mitigate the carbon footprint of their TV entertainment system meet this complexity in the form of a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

The typical hotel TV system upgrade cycle is approximately 6/7 years — much longer than the consumer equivalent. This slower pace is driven by multiple factors, including the cost and logistical challenges associated with replacing multiple units at once, and the requirement to support specialized firmware run by hotel TVs (driving hotel-specific functionalities like guest welcome screens, compatibility with hotel management systems etc).

The effects of this longer cycle are felt in the form of technical obsolescence, with hotel TV systems struggling to keep up with developments in consumer technology, and notably, failing to replicate the home environment TV experience (think sluggish processing power, cumbersome menus, reduced content options etc).

We don’t have a crystal ball, but we think that TV technology will continue to evolve at a much faster rate than the typical hotel TV upgrade cycle.

Does this mean that a hotel can’t provide an optimum guest room TV entertainment experience in a sustainable way?!

ROOMNET TV, helping hotels go green

Traditionally, the upgrade of hotel entertainment systems requires the expensive and environmentally-taxing replacement, and disposal of TV hardware.

ROOMNET's Apple TV for hotels platform offers a different approach.

Compatible with 99.9% of modern televisions, Apple TV integrates with a hotel’s existing TV hardware, allowing hotels to implement a sparkling new, premium system, whilst retaining the TV hardware.

Apple TV is an aspirational product, known for premium performance, a seamless user experience and an abundance of cutting-edge features. It provides more than just a compromise or a stopgap solution, it provides a class-leading guest room entertainment platform.

And best of all, Apple regularly updates the tvOS software, enhancing the user experience, improving functionality, and introducing new features. Rather than worry about technical obsolescence, the hotel can look forward to a system that improves with age!

A sustainable summary

The retention of television hardware ticks a number of sustainability boxes:

  1. Reduction in electronic waste: Each time a hotel opts to upgrade without replacing TVs, it prevents functional equipment from becoming waste. This approach supports the idea of a longer product lifecycle, where items are used efficiently until the end of their usability.
  2. Lower carbon emissions: Manufacturing and transporting new TVs contribute to carbon emissions. By repurposing existing devices, ROOMNET's solution reduces the carbon footprint associated with upgrading in-room entertainment systems.
  3. Energy efficiency: Apple TV devices consume less energy compared to many traditional entertainment systems, helping hotels reduce overall power usage. This is particularly valuable as hotels look to cut energy consumption in line with sustainability targets.
  4. Extended equipment lifespan: Leveraging existing televisions not only saves money but also aligns with the principles of the circular economy, where the focus is on maintaining, repairing, and reusing products for as long as possible.

A Balanced Approach to Modernization

Hotels are increasingly seeking ways to balance guest satisfaction with responsible environmental practices. ROOMNET’s Apple TV for hotels platform offers a practical pathway to achieving this balance, demonstrating that modernization doesn't have to come at the expense of sustainability. By rethinking how they approach in-room entertainment upgrades, hotels can make a significant impact—providing guests with modern conveniences while also reducing their ecological footprint.

This platform serves as a reminder that sustainable choices often involve optimizing what we already have, rather than always seeking the new. For hotels, it’s about finding smart, resource-efficient ways to enhance the guest experience—proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
